Preparing Your Masterpiece for The Cottage Quilter

Before we can do our job, we need you to do yours. Here are a few steps we require you take before submitting your quilt for stitching.

  • Size it up!
    • Your backing material should be 4 to 6 inches longer and wider than your quilt top. This allows for an ample amount of fabric necessary to finish the job right.
  • Square it up and press it down!
    • Piece and square your backing. Remove salvages prior to backing in order to prevent the backing from puckering during the stitching process. Don’t forget to square and press your quilt top, too. Flared or wavy borders cannot always be quilted to make them lay flat.
  • Which way does it go?
    • If your quilt is directional, mark the top edge of the quilt with a safety pin or paper attachment. That way we’ll know which end is up.
  • Check, check and triple check!
    • Look for possible mistakes, loose threads, or fraying pieces, and make the necessary repairs. We want your work to be picture perfect!
  • Batters up!
    • We do stock batting for your convenience, both 3 ounce polyester and Hobbs Heirloom 80/20 cotton batting.

We also offer a quilt basting service. Ask us for details!!
